Single Activity Recommendation Examples

All examples assume plan year starting January  1, ending December 31 and are based on sequence types.

Projected Date

There are three Pavement segments: Pavement A, Pavement B, and Pavement C. Each Pavement segment qualifies for two activities but only a single activity per asset per year can be performed.  The activities are sorted by Projected Date then grouped by Asset ID .   For each asset, the activities are sub-sorted based on the selected recommendation, which is Projected Date in Example 1 and Activity Cost in Example 2.  The activities sort in the following manner: 

As shown in the second example, the resulting Activity List may contain activities which are, in the end, not sequenced by Projected Date. The Projected Date is used to determine which asset needs work first, but the actual recommended activity for that asset could be projected to occur at any date in the plan year;  the actual recommended activity is based on the Recommend Single Activity By setting. If this is not the desired end result and you want to have all activities sequenced by Projected Date, then use Sequence Type is Projected Date and Recommend Single Activity By is First Qualifying, as is illustrated in the first example.

Example 1: Single Activity Recommendation of First Qualifying

  • Pavement A - Patch (Cost: $1,300, Impact: 20),   2/1/18 = Performed, wins because soonest date for this asset
  • Pavement A - Seal (Cost: $4,000, Impact: 70),     6/1/18 = Not Performed, because only one activity per asset per year is allowed.
  • Pavement B - Patch (Cost: $700, Impact: 25),   3/1/18 = Performed, wins before Pavement C because asset ID alphabetical
  • Pavement B - Rehab (Cost: $100, Impact: 15),  6/1/18 = Not Performed, because only one activity per asset per year is allowed.
  • Pavement C - Patch (Cost: $1,500, Impact: 25),   3/1/18 = Performed
  • Pavement C - Seal (Cost: $10,000, Impact: 50),     12/1/18 = Not Performed, because only one activity per asset per year is allowed.
    • Total Impact: 70
    • Total Cost: $3,500

Example 2: Single Activity Recommendation of Lowest Cost

  • Pavement A - Patch (Cost: $1,300, Impact: 20),   2/1/18 = Performed, is lowest cost activity for this asset
  • Pavement A - Seal (Cost: $4,000, Impact: 70),     6/1/18 = Not performed, is not the lowest cost activity for this asset this plan year
  • Pavement B - Patch (Cost: $700, Impact: 25),   3/1/18 = Not performed, is not the lowest cost activity for this asset this plan year
  • Pavement B - Rehab (Cost: $100, Impact: 15),  6/1/18 = Performed, is the lowest cost activity for this asset.
  • Pavement C - Patch (Cost: $1,500, Impact: 25),   3/1/18 = Performed, is lowest cost activity for this asset.
  • Pavement C - Seal (Cost: $10,000, Impact: 50),     12/1/18 = Not performed, is not the lowest cost activity for this asset this plan year
    • Total Impact: 60
    • Total Cost: $2,90

Asset Criticality

There are three Pavement segments: Pavement A, Pavement B, and Pavement C.  Each Pavement segment qualifies for two activities but only a single activity per asset per year can be performed.  The activities are sorted by Criticality Factor for the associated asset and grouped by Asset ID.  For each asset, the activities are sub-sorted based on the selected recommendation, which is Impact in Example 1 and Cost Per Impact in Example 2.  The activities sort as follows:

Example 1: Single Activity Recommendation of Highest Impact

  • Pavement B (Criticality Factor: 10) - Patch (Cost: $700, Impact: 25),   3/1/18 = Performed, is highest impact activity for this asset.
  • Pavement B (Criticality Factor: 10) - Rehab (Cost: $100, Impact: 15),  6/1/18 = Not performed, is not the highest impact activity for this asset this plan year.
  • Pavement A (Criticality Factor: 5) - Seal (Cost: $4,000, Impact: 70),     6/1/18 = Performed, is highest impact activity for this asset.
  • Pavement A(Criticality Factor: 5) - Patch (Cost: $1,300, Impact: 20),   2/1/18 = Not performed, is not the highest impact activity for this asset this plan year.
  • Pavement C (Criticality Factor: 0) - Seal (Cost: $10,000, Impact: 50),     12/1/18 = Performed, is highest impact activity for this asset.
  • Pavement C (Criticality Factor: 0) - Patch (Cost: $1,500, Impact: 25),   3/1/18 = Not performed, is not the highest impact activity for this asset this plan year.
    • Total Impact: 145
    • Total Cost: $14,700

Example 2:   Single Activity Recommendation of Best Value

  • Pavement B (Criticality Factor: 10) - Rehab (Cost: $100, Impact: 15) ($6.67 Cost Per Impact),  6/1/18 = Performed, is the highest impact per cost activity for this asset this plan year.
  • Pavement B (Criticality Factor: 10) - Patch (Cost: $700, Impact: 25) ($28 Cost Per Impact),   3/1/18 = Not performed, is not best value impact activity for this asset.
  • Pavement A (Criticality Factor: 5) - Seal (Cost: $4,000, Impact: 70) ($57.14 Cost Per Impact),     6/1/18 = Performed, is the highest impact per cost activity for this asset this plan year.
  • Pavement A (Criticality Factor: 5) - Patch (Cost: $1,300, Impact: 20) ($65 Cost Per Impact),   2/1/18 = Not performed, is not best value impact activity for this asset.
  • Pavement C (Criticality Factor: 0) - Patch (Cost: $1,500, Impact: 25) ($60 Cost Per Impact),   3/1/18 = Performed, is the highest impact per cost activity for this asset this plan year.
  • Pavement C (Criticality Factor: 0) - Seal (Cost: $10,000, Impact: 50) ($200 Cost Per Impact),     12/1/18 = Not performed, is not best value impact activity for this asset.
    • Total Impact: 110
    • Total Cost: $5,600

Scenario Limitation Exists

When the Scenario Type is anything other than Unlimited, the scenario respects the identified limitations. If the best activity in the example below, the one with the highest impact, does not fit into the parameters of the scenario, the system attempts to use the next best activity before moving on to another asset.

Scenario Settings:

  • Scenario Type = Budget Limitation
  • Budget: $55,000
  • Sort: Projected Date
  • Single Activity Recommendation: Highest Impact

Projected Activities:

  • Asset A | Overlay | +50 | $100,000 | 1/1/2017
  • Asset B | Overlay | +40 | $50,000   | 1/1/2017
  • Asset A | Grind     | +5   | $40,000   | 1/30/2017

Result:

Processes Asset A because it is first in the list.  Then tries to process Asset A's overlay, but it cannot because of budget.  Then it looks at the asset's sub sort and next to process is Grind for Asset A. It then process is Grind for Asset A because it is within budget.  No activities for Asset B is processed because there is not enough remaining budget.
