New Fields Names

This feature requires a Cartegraph OMS license.

New fields are created in Structure Manager. The guidelines include rules for ArcGIS field names for normalization for ArcGIS integration.

Use the following guideline to choose names for new fields:

Field Name

  • Contains any uppercase letter.
  • Contains any lowercase letter.
  • Contains any number, 0-9.
  • Must not include special characters, spaces, hyphens, ( ) [ ] { } $ % and #.
  • A field cannot be named OID. This is a reserved word.
  • Should not be too long. A good rule is 30 characters with a maximum of 120 characters.
  • Must not duplicate Field Name within the same recordset.
  • Limit the use of abbreviations. If used, be consistent among applications and use common, easy to understand abbreviations.
  • Avoid acronyms.
  • Should be singular.

ID

  • The Field Name will automatically be populated in the ID field with spaces removed.
  • ID must not contain spaces between words.
  • The ID cannot be changed once it is saved.
  • ID must not start with a numeric character.
  • ID must not start with cg.
  • Should not be too long. A good rule is 30 characters with a maximum of 120 characters.
  • Must not duplicate ID within the same recordset.
  • Must not include reserved SQL terms.

Column Name

  • The Field Name will automatically be populated in the Column Name field with spaces removed.
  • Contains any uppercase letter.
  • Contains any lowercase letter.
  • Contains any number, 0-9.
  • Must not include special characters, spaces, hyphens, ( ) [ ] { } $ % and #.
  • The Column Name cannot be changed once it is saved.
  • Column Name must not start with a numeric character.
  • Column Name must not start with cg.
  • Column Name cannot be greater than 30 characters.
  • Must not duplicate Column Name within the same recordset.
  • Must not include reserved SQL terms.
