ArcGIS Portal and Online License Levels and Cartegraph

With the release of ArcGIS 10.5, Esri unveiled ArcGIS Enterprise as an approach and deployment model for several of their enterprise applications. A base ArcGIS Enterprise deployment consists of ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Data Store, Portal for ArcGIS (federated ArcGIS server), and ArcGIS Web Adaptor. This powerful combination effectively delivers enterprise-wide GIS maps and solutions, while also maintaining a rich toolset for spatial analysis, content creation, and data sharing.

A key element of ArcGIS Enterprise is its ability to provide and leverage a secure named user account—also known as an ArcGIS Identity—unlocking access to maps, apps, and data that can be used on any device, anywhere. Embracing this concept, Cartegraph uses ArcGIS Identity to enable similar capabilities within its own applications. With ArcGIS Identity, a user can access their Cartegraph data and solutions as well as maps and data maintained within their ArcGIS platform.

With its Spring 2018 release, Cartegraph will enhance support for ArcGIS Identity, providing a more detailed ability to recognize the user’s persona, and ensure access to features and capabilities required by their unique responsibilities.

With its Fall 2018 release, Cartegraph added support for the ArcGIS Online new user types introduced in December 2018.

For ArcGIS Portal 10.5 and later, including ArcGIS Online, Cartegraph provides enhanced support for all the user types; Viewer (previously Level 1), Editor, Field Worker, Creator (previously Level 2), and GIS Professional.

If a user signs in with a Viewer (previously Level 1) ArcGIS Identity in Cartegraph, they will be able to:

  • View and interact with web maps
  • View and interact with Asset data and locations
  • Perform inspections on Assets
  • View, create, and edit Work Requests
  • View, create, and edit Work Orders
  • View, create, and edit Asset Tasks that are not GIS connected to ArcGIS Portal or Online, and Non-Asset Tasks

If a user signs in with either an Editor, Field Worker, Creator (previously Level 2), or GIS Professional ArcGIS Identity in Cartegraph, they will have the same capabilities as Viewer users, with the addition of:

  • Create and edit GIS connected assets to ArcGIS Portal or Online
  • Perform Spatial Analysis and Route Optimization

This applies to ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise deployments, ensuring an organization can provide the capabilities Cartegraph users need to effectively perform their jobs, while efficiently using an organization’s named user identities.

To assist in determining the appropriate named user license level for a user’s persona and needs, here are a few simple use cases with the appropriate, minimum license level:

Viewer (Formerly Level 1)

As a field worker, I create work Tasks, add time and resources to open Tasks, and close Tasks when work is complete.

As a field worker, I need to perform inspections on Assets.

As a field worker, I need to view an Assets location I plan to work on and details about the asset.

As an office worker, I need to create and validate a Work Request.

As a supervisor, I need to edit Task assignments and keep track of completed work.

As a manager/executive, I need to view summary information on daily operations within my organization.

As a Fleet worker or a Resource manager, I use Cartegraph to perform work without the need for maps or Assets.

Editor, Field Worker, GIS Professional, or Creator (Formerly Level 2)

As a field worker, I occasionally create Assets or update attributes on an existing Asset. For example, location or details like type, material, dimensions, etc.

As a supervisor, I need to run a GIS function to select features based on spatial locations. For example, all my signs within residential zoning districts.

As a supervisor, I need to create an optimized Task route for my field workers to follow.
